Mezzotint with stipple technique and etching of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Full length equestrian portrait facing left, depicted wearing armour and riding along a seashore, with ships in the distance at left and centre and an eagle, who holds a laurel wreath over the emperor's head, within a stormy sky. An English inscription at the bottom of the plate reads 'HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, Charles the Fifth, EMPEROR OF GERMANY, &c. &c. Engraved by Richard Earlom, from a drawing in chalk, after the Painting by VAN DYCK, formerly in the FLORENCE GALLERY; now at Paris. This portrait was originally painted by Titian.' The print is a later state of RCIN 612902, with the addition of letters. The print belongs to a series titled 'Fifteen splendid portraits of royal personages', published by Samuel Woodburn in 1816, with the prints completed c.1813-14.
