Engraving of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Full length equestrian portrait with the horse rampant and facing right. Charles wears a laurel wreath, armour, a cloak and the badge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. In his right hand he holds a baton, while his left hand takes hold of the reins. His horse wears a decorative saddle and plumed bridle. The background features a battle scene. Below the print is a Latin inscription beginning 'Terror Amorq orbis: fama super aethera notus...' The print has been trimmed.
The print is possibly linked to a series of engravings published by Crispijn de Passe the Elder titled 'The Twelve Emperors/Roman Emperors on Horseback', created c.1579-1637. -
