Albrecht I (Holy Roman Emperor) c.1844-1847
-
Hand coloured engraving of Albert I, King of Germany. Full length portrait inclined left, wearing a crown, purple robes, a yellow and green mantle while carrying a crown and drawn sword. There is significant discolouration of the paint or metal heightening across the robes and face. The arch shaped portrait sits within a rectangular frame inscribed in German, 'FRIEDRICH I.' The print has been taken from a book titled Die Deutschen Kaiser, published by S. Schmerber c.1844-47. The book is illustrated by printed portraits of Holy Roman Emperors, all after painted portraits completed in the nineteenth-century and hung in Frankfurt's Kaisersaal, a room of the City Hall once used for the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors. Queen Victoria's collection mark can be found at the bottom centre of the page.
