Hand coloured etching and engraving of Charles III (Charles the Fat), Carolingian Emperor. Half length portrait facing left, wearing a crown and mantle fastened at the shoulder while carrying a sceptre. The circular portrait sits within a square frame inscribed in German, 'KARL D. DICKE.' The print has been taken from a book titled Die Deutschen Kaiser, published by S. Schmerber c.1844-47. The book is illustrated by printed portraits of Holy Roman Emperors, all after painted portraits completed in the nineteenth-century and hung in Frankfurt's Kaisersaal, a room of the City Hall once used for the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors. The plate has been trimmed.
