Quirin Mark (1753-1811)
Carolus Magnus c.1804-1807
-
An etching of Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor. A bust length portrait turned slightly to the left, wearing a crown and bejewelled vestments decorated with eagles. A Latin inscription and title below the portrait reads 'CAROLUS MAG.' An inscription in the upper right of the plate lists the object as being 'No. 109'. The print was originally included in Anton Ferdinand von Geissau's Geschichte der römischen Kaiser: mit ihren Bildnissen (1804-1807), which included a series of etched portraits of Roman Emperors by the printmaker Mark Quirin.
