  • Engraving of Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor. Full length portrait seated on a canopied throne, wearing ornamented mantle and a crown. He supports an orb and sceptre, which rest in his lap, while raising his right hand in the sign of benediction. To his left are two warriors and to the right are two female figures. Behind him, within the four canopy alcoves, are representations of the Virtues. Either side of the canopy and Virtues are two angels looking down upon Charlemagne. The image sits within a moulded frame decorated with two laurel swags, resting upon a stone plinth. At the centre of this plinth are two roundels, both inscribed in Latin; 'KARVLVS. REX. R +' and 'METVLO'.
