-
Chiaroscuro woodcut of Arnulf of Carinthia, King of East Francia and disputed Holy Roman Emperor. Bust length portrait in profile, facing right, in brown and black ink that has been heightened by the natural colour of the paper. Arnulf wears draped mantle and crown. A Latin inscription within the circular frame reads 'ARNOLPHVS REX'. The print comes from Icones Imperatorum Romanorum; this fifth and final volume, published in 1645, added to a four volume series which posthumously published the work of Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583). The fifth volume contained 160 biographies of emperors, each illustrated with a chiaroscuro woodcut by Christoffel Jegher (1596-1652/3), (British Museum, shelfmark 209*.a.3). The print has been trimmed.
