Aquatint with etching, engraving and hand-colouring of Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor. Oval bust length portrait with face turned slightly to the left. He wears a white robe, white fillet and a blue mantle trimmed with yellow secured at the chest by a decorative brooch. Beneath the portrait is an etched image of the France Ancien arms flanked by the a papal tiara and crown. A French inscription surrounds this image, 'CHARLEMAGNE, ROI DE FRANCE COURONNE À NOYON EN 768, puis couronné Empereur d'Occidenz par le Pape Léon III, à Rome, en 800; né en 742; mort à Aix-la-Chapelle le 28 Janvier 814.' Beneath the portrait are inscriptions of the artist's name, 'Sergent delin.' and the engraver's name, 'Ride sculp.' 'The print has been trimmed.
