A flintlock rifle with octagonal steel barrel, brass mounts and engraved patch box; the lock engraved D Egg. Curly maple stock inlaid on the butt with a 13-point silver star engraved with inscription UNITED STATES WE ARE ONE and a silver escutcheon plate engraved JT for Colonel John Thomas, American riflemen.
Provenance
Belonged to Colonel John Thomas, commander of the Spartan regiment of militia in South Carolina. His son Captain Robert Thomas had the rifle at the Battle of Mudlick Creek, 2nd March 1781. It was subsequently refurbished in London by the gunsmith Durs Egg and presented to George IV by Major George Hanger.
