This bronze medal commemorates the survival of Alexander III and his family in a train crash of 17th October 1888. The Imperial couple are shown with five of their children on the obverse, (left to right) Grand Dukes George & Michael, Empress Maria Feodorovna, Emperor Alexander III, Grand Duchess Olga, Crown Prince Nicolas and Grand Duchess Xenia.
On the upper part of the reverse, a winged figure stretches out its hand protectively over the personification of Russia, while the lower part shows rescuers working around the crashed train.
