Lithograph printed in colour with hand-colouring of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with family. A novelty print, one of a series of prints with integrated movable flaps. View of the doors to the Queen's private apartments. When the two doors are opened, they reveal a scene of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, playing with three of their children, likely Victoria, Princess Royal, King Edward VII, and Princess Alice. Prince Albert crouches on all fours as one child holds a garland of flowers, functioning as reins, around his neck. To the left, another child holds a toy whip and pulls at Prince Albert's tie, while Queen Victoria holds the youngest child on the Prince's back. With English inscription below, including publisher's address, 'G.A.H. Dean & Co. Threadneedle St.'
One of a number of novelty prints produced between 1830 and 1860, which utilise flaps, tabs, or rotating wheels to create integrated movable parts. These prints were popular in the first half of the nineteenth century and were produced by a number of printmakers, however Dean & Co (later Dean & Son) specialised in the production of mechanical prints, later establishing themselves as the leading publisher of children's pop-up books in the 1860s onwards.
