His Royal Highness = the Prince Regent 1811
-
Etching with hand-colouring of George IV as Prince Regent. Whole length equestrian figure with plumed hat, braided uniform, sash over left shoulder and Garter star. With a a view of troops parading in the background. With English inscription below, including publisher's address, 'Pubd. by Dighton Spring Gardens. June 1811.'
Denis Dighton's print of the Prince Regent, made four years before the Battle of Waterloo, presents him as a martial hero. In fact the Prince was forbidden from a military career by his father and held only honorary army posts, much to his frustration. He pursued his interests instead by collecting numerous prints and drawings of military scenes. As the British head of state in 1815, he garnered much praise for the victory against Napoleon.
Not in O'DonoghueProvenance
Probably purchased by George IV when Prince Regent
