Engraving of Henry VIII, King of England. Bust length with beard, plumed cap with jewels, and embroidered robes edged in fur. With hands clasped in front, holding gloves. With Latin inscription and coat of arms above. Second state with date and engraver's monogram.
This engraving by Cornelis Massys is the earliest contemporary print of an English monarch in the Royal Collection. Massys' engraving shows Henry VIII at the end of his life, and it is likely that the Antwerp engraver made this print during his exile in England in the 1540s. The portrait presents Henry VIII as a richly dressed, imposing figure illustrating the status and power of the King.Provenance
Acquired by George III.
