Soft-paste Sèvres porcelain, white ground, richly gilt and painted with a looped pale blue ribbon edged with gold foliate trails and overlaid with circles of gold dots. In the centre of each plate is a bouquet of flowers in polychrome tied in a bow with a ribbon varying in colour between the plates. Each plate, its border gently concave, has a serpentine rim composed of sixteen scallops of alternating large and small size. The border has a moulded relief decoration picked out in gold; it is composed of a foliate trail which follows the contour of the larger scallops and at the level of the smaller ones breaks inwards in a twisted loop. Filling the space on the border created by these loops are triangular panels of the same colour and design as the ribbon. The rim of the plate is gilded, serrated on the underside, and the perimeter of the well is decorated in gold with a spidery trail of foliage. Dewdrops have been painted on some of the flowers, which include roses, convolvulus, double-headed anemones, auriculas, tulips, carnations, forget-me-nots, narcissi, delphiniums, poppies, primulas and violas.
Provenance
Possibly part of a set of thirty plates acquired almost certainly through the intermediary of François Benois. The plates are described in a ‘Notte des meubles et Porcelaines ordonnées par Sa Majesté’, dated 6 December 1820, as ‘30 Assiettes d’ancien Sevres Bleu turquoise a fleurs 3600 fcs’. In an undated bill relating to the same purchase, the flowers are described as ‘Gros Bouquets’. The plates were probably listed in the Carlton House porcelain inventory in 1826 among the pieces in the Confectionary: ‘No. 132. 30 Plates in light blue and gold, painted in bouquets & Compartments of butterflies [sic]’.
