Sèvres soft paste porcelain square fruit dish. White ground with gilded decoration. Serpentine in plan with four cabbage leaves alternating with four gold-edged leaves centred on a square reserve outlined by the pierced gilded frieze, which is canted at the corners. Polychrome bunches of flowers are painted on the cabbage leaves and butterflies or insects, singly or in pairs, on the others.part dessert service.
Provenance
Purchased for George IV’s use at Windsor Castle, almost certainly by François Benois in Paris. The items are included in a bill dated 23 October 1824, in which they are listed under the heading: ‘Compte Des Porcelaines acheptés Par Ordre de Sa Majesté pour Windsor: quatre Douzaines D’assiettes de Sevres / et 4 Compotiers à feuilles de Choux / et Cartels D’oiseaux £75’.
