A set of four shaped-oval porcelain fruit dishes with a gadrooned parcel gilt rim; deep blue border bearing Garter Motto in large tooled gilt letters; triangular gilt border around centre painted with lion upon Ducal coronet above crossed sprays of rose thistle and shamrock.
Provenance
Made for William IV, possibly prior to his accession when Duke of Clarence. Bequeathed or presented by him to Lady Augusta FitzClarence (one of his children with the actress Dorothea Jordan), then probably to a Captain Williams and subsequrently offered for sale.
Presented to the future King George V and Queen Mary when Duke & Duchess of York by the Royal Warrant Holders as a wedding gift, 1893. The Warrant Holders had acquired it from Mortlocks (the original retailers) for 475 guineas.
Sent by them for display in the King's Sitting Room, Palace of Holyroodhouse, until after 1937.
The service displayed in the China Museum, Windsor Castle, and for occasional buffet display during royal events including Garter Day lunch, throughout the twentieth century. -
