Prince Alfred (1844-1900) as 'Autumn' 1848
Parian ware | 44.0 x 14.8 x 15.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 53205
-
A parian ware figure of Prince Alfred, wearing a simple robe, holding a bunch of grapes in both hands and with his back leaning against an urn shaped vase. The figure is the allegory of Autumn. This figure is a reduction of a life-size marble commissioned in 1848 by Prince Albert from the sculptor Mary Thornycroft, part of a group in which Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's four eldest children were depicted as allegories of the seasons. The marble sculptures were commissioned for Osborne House in the Isle of Wight and were exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
Provenance
The original sculpture by Mary Thornycroft was commissioned by Prince Albert; presumably these parian reproductions were produced with the permission of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and with access to the marble originals. The parian versions in the Royal Collection are not unique but they appear to have been produced in small numbers. The sculptures were also reproduced in bronze.
