Ewer hallmark 1827/8
-
A silver-gilt ewer, with a tall lip spout cast with a mask, and a scroll handle cast as a female term. The body is embossed all over with espagnolette masks, strapwork, animals, flowers and foliage on a matted ground.
Provenance
This ewer was designed to accompany a silver cast of the sixteenth-century pewter dish by François Briot, known as the Temperantia Dish (RCIN 51660). The dish is similarly decorated with masks and strapwork. The dish and ewer were purchased by George IV in December 1827, for £134 3s.
