Silver gilt and ivory vase mounted on a Sèvres soft paste porcelain base. Vase embossed with foliage, husks and flowers, the ivory band carved with an illustration of the Rape of Sabine Women, gadrooned lower body and circular spirally gadrooned stem foot. The base of green ground with gilded decoration; four reserves painted posies of flowers and mounted on a stepped base.
Provenance
Acquired from Rundell, Bridge and Rundell; the vase was entered in George IV’s continuous inventory of plate on 5 July 1817. It was later recorded in 1832 in the inventory of plate under the heading ‘Sideboard Plate’ (‘A small Ivory Vase, beautifully sculptured; the Rape of the Sabine Women; richly mounted on a pedestal of Sèvres porcelain’).
