An ivory and silver-gilt trowel with a plain pointed blade engraved with a presentation inscription, Royal coat of arms (1801-37), Royal crest, supporters, Garter and motto, the handle cast and chased with acanthus foliage with a bulbous ivory grip and silver-gilt foliate mount.
Provenance
Presented to William IV, when Duke of Clarence, by the inhabitants of Hampton, Richmond, on 18 April 1830, after he laid the first stone at the new parish church of St Mary the Virgin. The former building, to which both Charles II and George I had contributed funds, was closed in December 1829. The new church opened on 1 September 1831 and was attended by Queen Adelaide, Princess Augusta and Prince George (later George V of Hanover).
