This is a ceremonial trowel presented to King George V on the occasion of his laying the foundation stone of the Commonwealth Buildings (later renamed Australia House) on 24 July 1913. The blade is made of gold with floral engravings and is attached to a reeded wooden handle bearing carvings of laurel leaves. The entire object is finished with enamel detailing: a crown finial, the state badges of Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia and an elaborate depiction of the Royal coat of arms.
