Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1811)
Pair of candelabra 1811
-
A pair of black marble vases mounted as candelabra with three gilt-bronze branches; the vase with gilt-bronze chains and tassels; on a circular base. Now fitted for electricity.
Provenance
An invoice in Benjamin Vulliamy's account book of 15 February 1811 records a delivery to George IV, when Prince of Wales, 'for a Pair of very handsome Candelabra for 3 lights each with very rich scroll branches & chased nozzles ... supported upon very large Black Marble Vases highly polished and enriched with Gilt Chains and Tassels and Gilt Bases standing upon Black Marble Blocks £57 15s.'
The Vulliamy family specialised in making and repairing clocks. From the 1790s, they produced bronze and gilt bronze objects of the highest quality. Often their role would be one of assembling parts made by different craftsmen, some of whom were directly employed by the family firm. -
