Sèvres soft paste porcelain part dessert service, early 19th century with later decoration. Dark blue ground with bunished gilded decoration, polychrome decoration composed of putti in oval reserves, baskets and bunches of flowers, laurel wreaths and berries painted naturalistically and taut garlands of flowers. Putti reserves alternate with wreaths and baskets of flowers. The oval reserves, enclosed in a burnished gold band, are painted with single putti, some carrying attributes, who float on clouds (many tinted a faint yellow) set against a blue sky. Above each reserve are two arching, crossed, floral polychrome garlands

Purchased in Paris for George IV by François Benois. The entry in his statement of account headed ‘Compte des Porcelaines acheptees Par Ordre de Sa Majesty pour Windsor’, dated 23 October 1824, reads: ‘Un Service de Porcelaine de Sevres à Cartels d’Enfans et fleurs composé de 131 Pieces £400’. Recorded in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No. 135. A Dessert Service of Seve Porcelain, painted in Roses, and blue borders, with Bouquets of Heartsease in the Centre, Consisting of: 7 Dozen of Plates; 4 Oval Compotiers; 4 Square Compotiers; 4 Round Do.; 4 Shell Do.; 2 Ice Pails and Covers; 2 Salad Bowls; 2 Coolers; 4 Small Do.; 14 Ice Cups; 2 Plateaux to Do.; 2 Muffin Plates and Covers; 2 Sugar Terrines with their Plateaux and Covers’.
