Hard paste porcelain French tray and tea service in Egyptian style. Crimson and green bands, the former overlain by stylised gilded ivy trails. The principal ornaments comprise Egyptian-inspired hieroglyphs and symbols (many imaginary), some in tooled gold, some in polychrome. They also include cobra-like creatures, beetles, canopic-style jars, stylised ornaments and pharaonic heads. Tray, tea pot, cream jug, sugar bowl and cover, 4 cups and saucers, egg cup and double salt cellar.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV. Recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No. 161. A Dejeuni of Modern French China in Crimson, green and gold, with Egyptian ornaments, Consisting of an Octagonal Plateau, 4 Cups and Saucers, Sugar Bason and Cover. Teapot, Cream Ewer, two Egg Cups, and a double salt’.
