Pair of octagonal silver vases, each with canted corners and moulded stepped rim, tapering body and moulded stepped base. Engraved with the Star of the Royal Victorian Order.
King George VI commissioned a set of altar plate for the Savoy Chapel in the late 1930s, this comprised an altar cross, two pairss of candlesticks, a pair of vases and an alms dish. A competition was held and the winning designer was Reginald Morier Yorke Gleadowe (1888-1944). It had been planned that the King would present the plate at the service in October 1939, however a request was made for the plate to be displayed at the World Fair in New York in 1939 as an example of British craftsmanship and this first presentation was delayed. Due to the war in Europe it was decided that the plate should remain in America, where it was put on display at a selection of locations and eventually kept at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York, until they were returned to Britain in 1945. The plate was formally dedicated on 22 October 1946.Provenance
