Beaker c.1685
Silver | 8.5 x 6.7 x 6.7 cm (whole object) | RCIN 49304
-
A plain silver beaker with slightly flared lip and reeded ring foot, decorated with a punched IT and FH within a cartouche of scrolls.
Provenance
Elizabeth Haselwood, widow of the Norwich goldsmith Arthur Haselwood, in common with many women of the period, assumed control of her husband's business after his death. She began to use her own mark of a crowned EH, although it is not clear whether she ever had any goldsmithing skills herself or whether she relied on the journeymen in her workshop. The Haselwood's business was one of the largest in the city in the late seventeenth century.
The beaker was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Mr F.G. Jackson, Vice-chairman of the Norfolk County Council, on behalf of the council, at the opening of the new County Hall, on 23 May 1968. -
