Robert Smythier (active 1660-1689)
Sideboard dish c.1664-86
-
A large circular silver-gilt altar dish, embossed in the centre with a crowned rose and AR monogram within a laurel wreath. The border is embossed and chased with a lion, unicorn, stag and running hound and with flowers (tulips, roses, carnations, daffodils and peonies).
Provenance
This dish forms part of the plate commissioned by Charles II to restock the Jewel House following the Commonwealth period, when most of the existing silver in the collection was melted down. The crowned rose with leaves sprouting from the stalk is a symbol of the restored Stuart monarchy. The dish was originally chased with a CR cypher for Charles II. As was common, this was later altered, and now shows an AR cypher for Queen Anne (although the curve of the C is still visible).
