The firm of Aubert & Klaftenberger was created in 1835 by the international partnership of two watch retailers, the London-based C.J. Klaftenberger and D.F. Aubert of Geneva. The firm was held in high esteem by Prince Albert, receiving regular orders for clocks and watches from 1845 onwards, and favoured by both the Queen and the Prince as the supplier of watches to be presented as gifts. The company was also a contributor to the horological section of the Great Exhibition, winning an Honourable Mention from the Jury. In 1859 Aubert & Klaftenberger were awarded a Royal Warrant.
The simple, engine-turned 18-carat gold case of this watch hints that it was not intended to impress with any cosmetic embellishment but instead with its high-quality Swiss movement, quarter repeating mechanism and keyless winding. These technical flourishes made this a practical watch for everyday use which would have appealed to Prince Albert, who attached considerable importance to accuracy, precision and reliability.
