Oval, double-lidded, gold snuff box, the cover hinged in the centre; the body pierced with a hole for the thumb, and tapering to the foot. The box is engine turned, with borders of husks on a matted ground. One cover is engraved with a GP cipher with coronet, the other with a royal crest within a Garter.
Struck with hallmarks for London, 1796/7, with duty mark and mark of George Cowdery.
Similar contemporary examples of this snuff box design can be found in the collection of National Museums Scotland (by Charles Jamieson, Edinburgh), and the British Museum, London (possibly Czech, made in Kaschau,1800).Provenance
The box was given to Thomas Bidwell by George IV when Prince Regent. Thomas Bidwell was a member of the Foreign Office and Deputy Ranger of Hyde Park. Presented to King George V by Queen Mary, Christmas 1932.
