An oval jasperware plaque in gilt metal bezel and upright rectangular giltwood frame with suspension loop and bombe glazing, the plaque with white low relief decoration of the profile of George IV when Prince of Wales, facing left, his hair cirled and held in a ponytail, wearing the riband of the Order of the Garter across his chest and the Star visible underneath, a medallion protuding from the end of the riband.
Provenance
Made for Queen Mary at Wedgwood, 1913, using historic moulds. The frame by J. Manley of Eton is from the early twentieth century. First recorded in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle in an inventory of Wedgwood porcelain dated 1914 - 17.
Reilly and Savage, Wedgwood, the Portrait Medallions, p.169. The original modelled by John Charles Lochee, c.1787, an example in the Wedgwood Museum. -
