Windsor Castle from the back fields at Eton c. 1770-1800

A watercolour drawing of the north side of Windsor Castle, seen from Eton playing fields. A riverbank in the foreground with several figures and cattle. A large tree on the right with wood and brick cottages behind. On the left, and men with boats unloading cargo. At the centre, a woman in a blue skirt and white cap is carrying a bucket. A boy in a red coat is raising his hat. Made from two sheets of paper, joined at the right and folded at the centre. Framed in black and gold with a gold plaque, 'Windsor Castle/From the Back Fields at Eton/Paul Sandby'. On the verso, an exhibition label, Peinture Anglaise, Paris 1938, no. 229. A pen and wash drawing in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914617) of the same view was used by Sandby as the model for an aquatint of Windsor from Eton published in 1777 (for example, British Museum 1904,0819.757). It was probably also the preparatory study for this work, a similar view in bodycolour that was bequeathed to the Royal Academy by William Sandby, and two other works in the Royal Collection (RCINs 451608 and 452398). It has been suggested that the figures in the foreground are a later addition.
