A white marble full-length sculpture of Edward VI as a young boy. He is shown with a dog sitting behind, holding a baton across his chest and with book in his left hand and wearing a flat feathered cap, the Garter collar across his chest and the Garter on the left leg. The statue is mounted on a gilt and moulded pedestal with an inscription. The Victorians developed an interest for historic subjects. Representations of heroic figures and sovereigns that celebrated England’s glorious past became popular. This is a melancholic and romanticised image of Edward VI, the short-lived king and only male heir of Henry VIII.
Provenance
Bought by Queen Victoria, June 1858.
