A framed watercolour portrait of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, wearing the uniform of the Austrian Hussars, with a view of Buckingham Palace and the Marble Arch behind him. Signed and dated. Upper corners trimmed.
The Swiss-born Albert Edward Chalon grew up and worked in England after his father was appointed to a post at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Chalon became a society portrait painter, and made portraits of the Duchess of Kent. Chalon also served as Painter in Watercolours to Queen Victoria. Prince Leopold visited England together with his three cousins (see RCINs 913247 and 451813) between June-September 1839. On June 10 1839, Queen Victoria mentioned in her journal that all four were being painted by Chalon.Provenance
