This watercolour and its pair illustrate George Eliot's popular novel Adam Bede, a favourite with both the Queen and Prince Albert. In this scene from the second chapter, Corbould has faithfully realised the author's detailed description of the young Methodist preacher and her audience, the villagers of Hayslope.
This work (and its pair, RCIN 451113) are shown hanging in the Princess of Wales's Dressing Room at Osborne House in a photograph of 1873 by Jabez Hughes (RCIN 2103663).
