The royal purchase of this watercolour at an exhibition in 1842 was important in establishing Corbould’s reputation. The theatrical depiction of Christ’s defence of a woman accused of adultery (John 8:7) is typical of the artist’s rich style, more comparable to oil painting than to the British watercolour tradition.
