A watercolour showing Queen Victoria investing the Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz I with the Order of the Garter on board the Royal Yacht. The watercolour is signed at lower right. In 1867 Sultan Abdülaziz I was invested with the Order of the Garter by Queen Victoria on board the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert. This watercolour records the event and shows members of the royal party watching the Sultan become the 756th Knight of the Garter. Behind the Sultan stands his First Chamberlain, the Master of Ceremonies, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his young son, Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin Efendi. On the left, behind Queen Victoria, stand the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Arthur, Prince Leopold, Prince Louis of Hesse, Princess Beatrice, and three Ladies in Waiting. In the right foreground are Princess Louise and Lady Churchill. The investiture of the Sultan took place on board the Royal Yacht in order that he could view a Naval Review held in his honour at Spithead.
