A watercolour depicting a naked woman, identified as a witch by the work's title, on a winged horse flying over the city of Florence at night. Signed and dated.
Hughes's uncle, Arthur (1832-1915), was very closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and executed a large body of paintings with medieval subject matter. Hughes himself modelled for Dante Gabriel Rossetti and worked as a studio assistant to William Holman HuntProvenance
Presented as part of the Coronation Gift to King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra from The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1902.
