By the time of the Abdication on 11th December 1936, preparations for King Edward VIII coinage with the issue date of 1937 was well-advanced, and a few sets were made for presentation to the new King and to institutions.  It included the traditional design for the £5, £2 and sovereign coins, and new designs for several of the reverses of the lesser coins.  Most notable is the dodecagonal threepence, a more robust coin than the very small silver threepence of previous reigns, and several reverse designs were kept in the King George VI sequence.  However, the greatest break with tradition came from King Edward's insistence that his effigy should face left, the same way as his father, King George V, rather than facing the opposite way.
