Medals have long been minted to celebrate a coronation of a new monarch. This medal was struck to celebrate the Coronation of King George V in 1911. The obverse shows the King crowned and wearing the Order of the Garter, with the Orb next to him representing the monarch’s power derived from God. On the reverse there is the bust of the King’s Queen Consort Mary who is also crowned. This medal was designed by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, an Australian sculptor and medallist. He was the preferred sculptor of King George V and therefore created a number of his likenesses, including the King’s head for the coinage and stamps of the new reign.
