3.42 cm (diameter) | RCIN 443317
-
This medal was struck to commemorate the Coronation of George III in 1761. On the obverse is a bust of George III in classical roman clothing and a laurel on his head, harking back to the classical rulers. The reverse shows George III, with a lion beside him, being crowned by Britannia. This medal was designed by Johann Lorenz Natter. Natter was a German engraver who originally trained as a jeweller, then trained in gem-engraving in Venice. Natter arrived in England in 1741, and was employed in the Royal Mint as an engraver. In 1762 Natter went to work in St. Petersburg and died there in 1763.
