-
One of 15 coins and medals in a case formerly in the possession of Charles Edward Stuart, 'The Young Pretender' (RCIN 7443193).
Celebrating the birth of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the reverse of this medal shows the figure of Providence holding a child and pointing to a globe on which appears 'ING', 'SC' and 'IRL' (England, Scotland, and Ireland), with an inscription around reading PROVIDENTIA OBSTETRIX ('Providence, helper in childbirth'). The legend below records the Prince's birthdate, the last day of 1720. The double portrait of James III & VIII and Clementina on the reverse is also depicted on an earlier medal of 1719 celebrating their marriage (see RCIN 443212).
