George I was crowned in 1714, and this medal commemorates the event. The obverse shows a draped bust of George I dressed as a Roman emperor and wearing a laurel wreath. The reverse shows Britannia crowning George I, who is holding the Orb and Sceptre, representing the crown’s power and governance. The medallist was John Croker, who was a German engraver who worked at a number of mints around England as well as the mint in the Tower of London. He designed a number of coins for William III and Queen Mary and was Chief Engraver to the Royal Mint from 1705 until his death in 1741. It is reported that the scientist Sir Isaac Newton contributed to the design as Newton and Croker were known to work closely together.
