This medal was struck in 1689 for the joint Coronation of William III and Mary II on 11 April 1689. It shows William and Mary jointly on the obverse; William wears a laurel wreath while Mary’s head is bare. The reverse of the medal shows Jove thundering against Phaeton who falls from his chariot, as the chariot races through the flames. This medal was designed by the medallist Jan Roettiers who was born in Antwerp in 1631. Roettiers worked for the Royal Mint in London, and previously he had worked at the Antwerp Mint.
