This medal was struck to celebrate the English Coronation of Charles II in 1661. It shows King Charles wearing ermine robes and a crown. On the reverse it shows Charles II being crowned by Peace. This medal was designed by Thomas Simon, who had been trained by Nicholas Briot, the designer of the medals relating to Charles I’s Scottish coronation in 1633 (RCINs 443093, 443094). In 1635 Simon was appointed to a post in the Royal Mint and in 1645 he was appointed chief engraver alongside Edward Wade. Simon eventually was promoted to Chief Engraver for the Royal Mint. During the Commonwealth period he produced a number of portrait medals of Oliver Cromwell. After the Commonwealth Simon designed medals for Charles II.
