  • Black leather case with initials KBE, lined inside with white satin and beige velvet, containing neck badge with collar ribbon, silver star and evening collar ribbon; neck badge in the form of a cross patonce in blue enamel edged with silver gilt, with central silver-gilt reserve of the conjoined left-facing busts of King George V and Queen Mary both crowned, surrounded by a circle of red enamel set with motto FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE in gilt lettering, the whole surmounted by a hinged gilt crown with suspension loop, and reverse in silver gilt with crowned GRV monogram in centre; silk collar ribbon for male wearer in rose pink with pearl grey edges and gilt-metal hook; silver star of four large points and four smaller intervening points, centred with silver-gilt reserve of the conjoined left-facing busts of King George V and Queen Mary both crowned, surrounded by a circle of red enamel set with motto FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE in gilt lettering, with gilt-metal pin and blank reverse; narrower silk evening-collar ribbon in rose pink with pearl grey edges and gilt-metal hook; order instituted by King George V in June 1917 for services to the Empire other than those rendered by the Army and Navy and originally set with a depiction of Britannia in central reserve of the insignia, later replaced in 1936 with the King and Queen as with this example
