Statuette of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the guise of Mars, the bearded, naked figure standing with his raised right arm supported by his sword, and with an oval shield by his left side. A leafy twig covers the genitalia. A helmet lies on the ground behind the tree stump. The figure stands on a plain square bronze base. The head and pose of the figure are very close to the life-size marble statue of Hannibal Counting the Rings commissioned from Slodtz for Versailles in 1687 and later installed in the Tuileries gardens. In the creation of this bronze, which is of extremely high quality, Slodtz seems to have made an additional subject from the same posed model.
