Gold-edged white enamel snowflake; the centre obverse with a red maple leaf on white surrounded by DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM, gold in red, surmounted by a gold and enamel crown with rubies, emeralds and a sapphire. The reverse with CANADA in gold on white above 250 in gold. With a red and white ribbon.
Provenance
On 1 July 1967, Queen Elizabeth II was in Canada for the centenary of the Confederation of Canada. On that day she instituted the Order of Canada – allowing her to honour her Canadian subjects with a Canadian Order rather than a British one. The design of the badge incorporates the national symbols of the snowflake and maple leaf, and also reflects the colours of the new Canadian flag which had been instituted in 1965.
