The badge was described as ‘The Order worn by the Grand Master of Malta’ in the 1830 inventory of jewels at Windsor Castle. The 1837 inventory adds that it was ‘presented to His late Majesty George IV by Sir William Curtis’. Sir William Curtis (1752-1829) was a friend of George IV and Lord Mayor of London in 1795-6.
