The Duke of Connaught's Investiture Garter Star 1860-67
Enamelled silver and gold | 8.1 x 7.8 cm (whole object) | RCIN 441395
-
Garter Star. The centre has a red cross of St George enamelled on gold encircled by a blue enamelled Garter with chased gold borders, bearing the motto in slightly carved gold letters. The rays are pierced and facetted. The circular back is engraved with the purveyor's name "R & S Garrard & Co." The Star belonged to Arthur, Duke of Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria, who received the Garter in May 1867. It is typical of the late Victorian official Investiture Stars issued to the Knight's Companions after 1860, which were made almost square by filing down the four principal points. The Duke wore it with great consistency throughout his life.
