A blue velvet Garter edged by gold cable stitch embroidery with the motto applied in letters of gold. There are roses between each word and an ornamental leaf pattern after the last word of the motto, all embroidered in gold thread. The oval buckle is plain matt gold, the clip engraved in an elaborate floral pattern. The tab is engraved in a similar floral pattern surrounding a head in profile. The reverse is plain blue. Victor Emanuel II as King of Sardinia was Britain's ally during the Crimean War. He was invested with the Garter by Queen Victoria in a full Chapter of the Order at Windsor on December 5, 1855. In 1860 he became the first King of United Italy. This Monarch was the subject of the famous remark that of all the Knight's of the Garter he was the only one who looked able to cope with the dragon.
